My Favorite Unreleased Track

Lady Chatterlaine

Back in the dark year of 2003 (Seriously. Bad year.) i made an album called Echo Location, that due to a string of disasters (most notably my studio got fried. Lost my computer, sampler and synth) was never completed. It was close, mind you, but there was still much work to be done. All i have of it are whatever demo versions of the 10 tracks had last been mixed down.

Almost all of the tracks involved a female singer except one. For this one, i sent the music to a friend of mine, Matthew of The MAtthew Show and asked him to throw down some lyrics and vocals.

The results were awesome and this has long been one of my favorite tracks, even with the crappy sound quality. Like the best in collaboration, he brought something to it i never, ever in a millions years would have thought of. It’s a bit quirky.

I will never return to the uncompleted Echo Location album. It was something i wrote then, and i would prefer if i’m going to put all the work into something, to put it into something new. (beginning Chtulu’Funk as soon as my foot is healed) Still, it has always seemed a shame to let this particular piece remain forever unheard.

One last note to the few of you out there who are familiar with my Mocha Lab work. The title is Lady Chatterlaine which may seem oddly like the track Sister Chatterlaine, the very first track off of the album Subduction. Coincidence?

I was so enamored with this track that i had decided way back in Echo Location days, that i would, over some indeterminant span to time to make 3 seperate tracks revolving around a Chatterlaine woman. I didn’t plan out what they would be , of course, just made a note to self to do it.

In addition, Lady Chatterlaine was the last track on Echo Location and 2 years later, after i had bought myself an awesome new studio and made an awesome new album, Sister Chatterlaine was the first track on the new one. You know, full circle and all that…

Enough drivel. Sorry about the sound quality, but here’s a personal lost favorite from a few years back.

Lady Chatterlaine

  1. I do enjoy that track, pity we only have the lo-fi version extant. Though I wouldn’t be opposed to re-tracking it one day. Ahem.

I still think the definitive Mocha Lab/matthew show collaboration has yet to occur. Perhaps when the kids are old enough to look after themselves, we can lock ourselves in a shack somewhere and create something damned interesting. I hear shacks in Belize are cheap.

  2. I worry that i wouldn’t be able to recapture the particular, melancholy, cheap toy feel, but actually, i might give it a shot. It’s not technically difficult, all the parts are simple to replay. It all hinges on choices of sound. (i no longer have the notes that tell me which sounds i used or the synth i was using at the time)

It’s possible…. hmm….. yes. It’s October 1. Let’s aim for completion in a month’s time. Let me get out of this damn cast.

Otherwise, i agree, the definitive collaboration has never occurred. One day, my friend, one day….
