Mountaintop 4th of July

I listened to this track last night on my terrace for the first time in a long time, and was reminded of what a great, great song this is. So I thought i’d share it with y’all.

It’s by The Matthew Show, who has just released a brand new album February, a wonderful project that can best be summed up by one of the reviewers:

“Sardonic yet compassionate, this tuneful, idiosyncratic work lands at the intersection of documentary and classic pop.  Songwriter and producer Matthew Broyles, moved by the uncertain state of his and his friends’ lives, examines hope, regret, and fickle truth, leading lively interviews in pursuit of George Orwell’s “power of facing unpleasant facts.”

“What emerges is a deft portrait of five adults on the cusp of middle age, each asking, “Is this all there is?”  In reply, Broyles explores and exposes their lives in a patchwork of word and song.  Calling on the support of a stellar cast, he cajoles and enlightens, crafting a vivid and jarringly universal portrayal of contemporary life.”

It might interest you to know that both Maja and i were 2 of those interviewees (which sadly, has rendered Maja completely incapable of listening to the finished album. She freaks out every time she hears her voice and then gets all weirded out expecting to hear it again any second. I am not allowed to play the album around her. Pregnant women are utter nutjobs. )

In any case here’s a little sample from February as long as i’m talking about it:

The Impotent Rage

You can download February from Amazon or iTunes. The audio interviews in between the actual songs are half the joy of the album. Give a listen…

  1. Aww, c’mon Maja, you’re the hit of the record. Seriously, people ask me who the foriegn chick is all the time. It would be far less interesting if it were all Yanks.
